I know, I know ... folks are getting so tired of hearing me sing the phrases of Galaxie 500, Luna, and Dean & Britta, but what can I do, the music flows into my soul, where it then filters out through every vein, washing over me like some intoxicating barbiturate, never causing me to stumble, but certainly bringing exotic comforts.Of course this is a “Best Of ...,” and while I’m not usually a fan of such recordings, this one’s really good, though once you get listening to the tracks, you begin to wonder why some songs were included, and why others didn’t find their way onto the release. Well the answer is pretty easy ... Disc Two consists of mainly cover songs, and brilliantly so, while Disc One is practically the set-list for Luna’s shows. That’s right, you get yourself a taste of what being at a Luna show would have involved. Though if you want to sample one of those shows there are some great bootlegs out there, I know, I was at several of the bootlegged events [enough said].But the thing that sold me on this great set was the limited edition poster that came with it. Rhino, for about $160 included a giclee fine art print, it’s actually the cover of the disc, and it’s signed by all of the members of the band. Lucky for me I didn’t have to purchase it, Dean and Britta laid the whole package on me [we’ve been trading posters for some time now], and yes, if it sounds like I’m bragging a bit, perhaps I am ... sometimes it’s downright embarrassing being a fan. Now, once you have this release down pat, you’ll want to score the rest of Luna’s material, then explore Galaxie 500, and Dean & Britta. And best, when you score this set you won’t need to get the downloadable only “Lunafied” album of covers, you’ll find all of them right here. There’s not a lot more I can say here other then that Luna and Galaxie 500 will go down in history right next to The Velvet Underground. So, enough said, go get it, enjoy it, float away untethered, and wake up comfortably wrapped in the sheets of your own bed, feeling very guilty.Mouse: So Dean, there’re so many places I like to take this, but for now perhaps we could zone in on the Lunafied songs, you know, the covers ... and maybe once and for all get your take on ‘em, and what you were thinkin’.Dean: I ‘m not sure about the hole “thinking” part ...Mouse: Well, let’s start with “Bonnie & Clyde,” do you really speak French?Dean: Stereolabe and Luna were both signed to Elektra, Terry Tolkin suggested that Laetitia and I sing a duet. It was Laetitia who picked “Bonnie & Clyde.” I have to admit that she helped me with my French pronunciation ... and now I’ve got it down pat. Oddly enough, Jane Scarpantoni plays cello on the song, and Sean uses his vocal chords to imitate the sound of a cuica. Version “Bonnie Parker,” the last song on the album, now that’s the sexy version.Mouse: Then there’s “Ride Into The Sun” and Blondie’s “In The Flesh,” both of them present a compelling side to your voice.Dean: It just comes out [laughing]. “In The Flesh” was part of a tribute to Blondie during our Penthouse years, but it never materialized. As for “Ride Into The Sun,” it’s an obscure Velvets track taken from a bootleg. I believe Stanley suggested this one.Mouse: And “Indian Summer”?Dean: We played that one a lot during our shows, I never got tired of it. Usually we’d let it hang out there for an encore.Mouse: “Neon Lights” I would have guess, but never in a million years would I have suspected a rendition of Lennon’s “Jealous Guy.”Dean: Both Justin and Sean stand out on this track, Justin with the mellotron and Sean on a great slide guitar solo. Noah Baumbach asked us to record this one for his film “Mr. Jealousy.” And “Neon Lights” of course is a Kraftwork song, and was laid down the day after we finished the session for Days Of Our Nights proper. Seems we did our best work the day after the sessions were finished ... “Sweet Child O Mine,” “Neon Lights,” and “Emotional Rescue.” “Sweet Child” was intended as a B-Side, but it was so strong it made the cut and made the album. I met this fellow at a Bowery show, and he insisted that Guns N’ Roses didn’t write the song, and that in fact it was written by a friend of his, who worked as a lifeguard, and he had written this beautiful song about his girlfriend ... of course that’s all rumor, but who knows[?].Mouse: “Dream Baby Dream” is wonderful, where you pull that from?Dean: The track was produced by Kramer at Noise New Jersey, for a tribute to Suicide. Lots of tribute albums out there, they get started, and never finished.Mouse: The 45 cover for “Outdoor Miner” was not what I’d have expected from you, any thoughts?Dean: We recored this for a 7” single on a Spanish label. Just told them, “Why don’t you choose the artwork. I’m sure it will be fine.” Hmmmm, they went and chose a gruesome photograph of a dead cat with a metal spike driven through it’s eye. Go figure.Mouse: Well, I guess at this juncture I’d like to ask about your voice. You're all over the place. Do you consider the sources when you cover a song, or do you just go with how you feel at the moment. Of course I could ask if it’s all just an act, because you really don’t seem to have a vocal style that can be locked in place.Dean: And that’s a good or bad thing ...
